Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad

What a nightmare! I spent 2 weeks trying to work out what the heck was happening to my main site - the MY-SQL database kept losing stuff, then one morning every single item disappeared. So we moved the site, reinstalled the shopping cart software and reuploaded a backup I'd done a couple of days earlier and crossed our fingers.

And still the mayhem continued! After about another week of losing bits, and people not being able to buy stuff, we finally had a look at the admin access files and realised that something else was accessing the site - there were 2 very different IP addresses, ours and what we assume was a bot bumbling around deleting and changing files. So we blocked that IP address, changed our admin passwords to what I hope are unbreakable strings of letters, numbers, characters and capitals, and haven't had any trouble since. It was a bad fortnight, though. I felt paranoid the whole time, like someone was out to get me.

I agree, Jed.
The trouble is, anyone who isn't knowledgable about such things would be completely lost. I would have to get someone in to fix it. How much would it cost to find someone to clear up a hacking job like this?

That's terrible, Judy. I hope you've got it completely fixed.

So far so good, Suz. We blocked the other IP address a week ago and haven't had any more problems with stuff changing or disappearing. The trouble now is that whenever someone complains about not being able to do something like change a delivery address, I get all paranoid and rush in to see what's wrong. It's usually user error, though.

Wabbit, I hate to think how much it would cost, although an 'expert' may have picked up the problem a lot earlier than I did. Greg posted a few questions on the CCP (shopping cart software) forum to ask about missing bits of data, and no-one there was able to help, which may just mean that none of them had had their sites hacked ... yet.

Good.

Yes, you will be paranoid for a while. OTOH some paranoia is good. So long as you don't start being paranoid about Greg.
